Classroom Upgrades in Humanities Hall and Social Science Lab

Classrooms in Humanities Hall (HH) and Social Science Lab (SSL) received much needed improvements over summer to enhance the physical spaces and provide greater flexibility for instructors implementing active learning strategies. Key changes include:

  • Interior upgrades for all 38 classrooms, including new LED light fixtures, paint, and chair rails
  • New furniture for 33 classroom, most of which now feature Steelcase Shortcut chairs that enable students to turn around and more comfortably interact with their classmates during collaborative learning activities
  • New lecterns in 20 classrooms that provide height-adjustability and more flexible display arms

In a related project, the HH 178 lecture hall also underwent a major renovation. Upgrades to this this space include:

  • New lighting, paint, and flooring
  • New seats with power outlets for every student
  • New seating layout that better supports student-instructor interaction (students are no more than 6 seats from an aisle)
  • New lectern and lighting controls

DTEI would like to recognize and thank our partners in the Division of Finance and Administration and the Office of Information Technology for their collaboration and effort in implementing these changes. These classroom enhancements and those we are currently planning for the next phase are essential to DTEI’s goal of aligning campus learning environments with evidence-based teaching practices. We look forward to continued collaboration.
