New Faculty Teaching Academy
All faculty new to teaching at UCI are invited to participate in the New Faculty Teaching Academy (NFTA). The 2022 Academy will be held September 7th and 8th in AIRB 1030. Register now!
The Academy is designed specifically for new professors with limited teaching experience; however, new faculty with more experience who are still interested are more than welcome to participate.
Co-sponsored by the Office of Academic Personnel and facilitated by the Division of Teaching Excellence and Innovation, the Academy is also designed to be practical and hands-on. Faculty have the option of designing a complete syllabus.
Participants receive a Certificate of Participation that can be added to their tenure and promotion files.
Designed as a series of integrated modules, participants can sign-up for the number of modules that they feel will best suit their needs.

September 7th
MODULE 1: 10:00 – 10:30 WELCOME & INTRODUCTION
Let’s get your quarter off to a great start by meeting other new faculty and learning more about the Division of Teaching Excellence and Innovation and how we can help you succeed at UCI.
MODULE 2: 10:30 – 11:30 WHO WILL YOU BE TEACHING?
Learn more about UCI’s student body and what teaching strategies work well in helping students learn.
LUNCH 11:30 – 12:30
MODULE 3: 12:30 – 2:00 STUDENT ENGAGEMENT AND INCLUSIVE TEACHING
Learn more about simple strategies you can implement in your teaching that helps students feel motivated and included in your classroom.
MODULE 4: 2:00 – 2:45 Q&A WITH CURRENT FACULTY
What is it like to teach at UCI? How do you manage large classes? What resources are available to faculty? This session will be a Q&A with current UCI faculty who will share their experiences at UCI and offer helpful advice and insights for success in your first year.
MODULE 5: 3:00 – 4:00 CLASSROOM TECHNOLOGY (ALP 2200)
Come explore, test, and learn more about the technology available for classrooms and remote teaching. We will address tools such as Zoom, lecture capture, and more. An expert will demonstrate and answer individual questions.
September 8th
MODULE 6: 10:00 – 1: DESIGNING YOUR COURSE (Includes Lunch)
Creating a course requires more than just determining what content you will cover. This module will help you identify your student learning outcomes, create assignments and exams that align with these outcomes, and construct a syllabus. You will be given time to work on your course.
MODULE 7: 1:00 – 1:45 Q&A WITH DTEI STAFF
Learn more about the Division of Teaching Excellence and Innovation and how we can help you with teaching, managing TAs, education research, and online teaching.
MODULE 8: 2:00 – 4:00 INTRODUCTION TO CANVAS
Learn more about UCI’s learning management system, Canvas, and get a head start on setting up your course space. Experts from our online learning division will demonstrate features and tools and answer any questions you may have. This includes work time and individual assistance from instructional designers.
