Peer observation plays a crucial role in the continuous improvement of teaching practices. By engaging in structured observations of peers, educators can gain valuable insights into alternative teaching methods, effective classroom management strategies, and innovative approaches to student engagement. This collaborative approach not only fosters a supportive professional environment but also promotes reflective teaching practices that are essential for enhancing student learning outcomes. Through constructive feedback and mutual exchange of ideas, peer observation cultivates a culture of continuous learning among educators, ultimately contributing to the overall quality and effectiveness of teaching practices. Although it may seem like the person receiving the feedback also receives the most benefit, observers frequently report that they too receive helpful ideas through this collaborative process.
At DTEI, we have developed a peer observation protocol that encourages reflective practice on numerous aspects of the course, such as:
- Alignment of assignments and assessments to course goals and learning objectives.
- Time usage both in and out of the classroom.
- Inclusive and pedagogical wellness teaching practices.
- Any other requested feedback.
The general procedure for the protocol includes:
-
- Teaming up with a colleague (any disciplinary background can work well since you’re focusing on the pedagogy, not the content).
- Having a pre-observation meeting where you will discuss the goals of the observation as well as any material the instructor has shared.
- Carrying out the observation and taking notes during the class session.
- Conducting a post-observation meeting where you discuss the goals of the observation, the class session itself, and collaboratively create action items for the instructor.
