  • Assessment
  • Course/Lesson Design
  • Peer Observation of Teaching

Methods to Earn the Certificate in Teaching Excellence

While 390X requires 1 set of observations (being observed and observing someone else), participants need to complete 2 additional sets of observations to earn the Certificate.

Pros: The University 390X course is a seminar that meets weekly throughout the quarter and appears on your transcript. This option provides the most structure as well as a greater opportunity for peer learning and collaboration. In addition, participants form an interdisciplinary community. Participants also earn the Certificate in Course Design and the CIRTL Associate Level.

Cons: Regular class meetings and assignments may be time-restricting.

Note: If you complete 390X by the end of Fall quarter or the online self-paced version by December 1st, you are eligible to apply for the Pedagogical Fellowship.

Online modules allow you to upload evidence of studying various topics. This evidence consists of write-ups of readings or workshops. Here are the upcoming workshops that may partially meet Certificate requirements. After the requirements are complete, participants schedule an exit interview to earn the Certificate.

Enroll in the Canvas course at the following link: https://canvas.instructure.com/enroll/P97H4G

Pros: Complete at your own pace while affiliated with UC Irvine.

Cons: This way can be complex and may take longer than one quarter to complete. In addition, there is less accountability and community building.

This way is used in conjunction with the self-paced manner using Canvas. To verify that the course meets the Certificate requirements, scroll down to the “Course Equivalencies” section. After participating in one of the approved courses, participants complete the other requirements on Canvas. When finished, participants simply e-mail Daniel Mann (dmann@uci.edu) with proof of completion of the course.

Pros: Apply past experiences towards Certificate, which may appear on their transcript.

Cons: Course may not meet all the requirements.

Course Equivalencies

Below is a table of department-specific pedagogy courses and what CTE modules each fulfills. Please note that we still require a syllabus submission on Canvas, even if the indicated course satisfies the Course Design requirement.
