On Thursday, September 19, 2024, UC Irvine faculty, staff, and graduate students are invited to participate in the second annual UCI Teach Day. Hosted by the Division of Teaching Excellence and Innovation (DTEI) at the Anteater Learning Pavillion (ALP), UCI Teach Day is an all-day event dedicated to celebrating effective teaching and learning, promoting a campuswide culture of inclusion and equity, and recognizing the incredible faculty and instructors who embody these goals.

The theme of this year’s UCI Teach Day festivities is Striving for Equity, Together, a message that Brian Sato, DTEI Associate Dean and Professor of Teaching for Molecular Biology and Biochemistry, says is central not only to DTEI’s mission but UC Irvine’s mission as a whole:

“UC Irvine is proud to serve a diverse student body and offer them educational opportunities and resources that empower their success. The ability to provide equitable, inclusive, and accessible instruction is at the heart of this goal. This is why we have dedicated this year’s UCI Teach Day to the varied ways we can work together to ensure our students are getting the education they deserve.”

In support of this year’s theme, DTEI will host Dr. Whitney Peoples, Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at the University of Michigan, as keynote speaker to share insights gained from her over 20 years of experience in feminist and critical race research, activism, and teaching. UCI Teach Day will also feature a student panel and several breakout sessions focused on education research, professional development opportunities, and facilitated discussions on pressing educational issues to offer attendees different perspectives for addressing diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in the classroom.

UCI Teach Day will conclude with the 32nd Annual Celebration of Teaching, which recognizes the Dr. De Gallow Professor of the Year, Most Promising Future Faculty, and additional instructors who have been honored with campus teaching awards over the past year. “The Celebration of Teaching is our way of honoring faculty and graduate students who truly strive to make a difference through their exceptional teaching,” explains Danny Mann, DTEI Executive Director.
