UC Irvine Division of Teaching Excellence & Innovation

Reader Training

The UC Irvine Reader training is tailored to the needs of UC Irvine undergraduate and graduate students who are interested in serving as a Reader or who may currently hold a Reader position. This training provides an introduction to the Reader role, as well as specialized training in grading methods, different learning and teaching technologies, communication, and professionalism. It was created by The Division of Teaching Excellence and Innovation and The Center for Excellence in Writing and Communication. It is presented by Emily Parise (Ph.D. Candidate, Drama and Theater).

Our Reader Training is offered through Canvas, and it is a self-enrolled, self-paced training designed to take no more than two hours. Students interested in developing skills associated with Reader positions are invited to complete this self-paced Canvas training. Note: This training is a professional development resource that is not a University requirement to serve in a Reader role.

Enroll on Canvas.

Training Overview

This training is broken up into two parts:

Part one is a universal training that covers the basics of grading, communication, and professionalism. After participants complete this section and the exit quiz, they will be able to move onto part two.

Part two offers specialized training that will provide guidance on grading relevant to various academic fields. Participants will be offered five different branching paths, each one representing a major type of assignment they may encounter:

  1. Essays
  2. Lab reports
  3. Exams
  4. Math homework sets
  5. Presentations and performances

Each participant should take at least one of these branching paths training, but they are also able to take more than one if they are expecting to grade a variety of assignments.

Completing the Training

At the end of each branching path, participants will take an exit quiz. Those completing the training should retain screenshots of completed exit quizzes for their professional development records.
