Abstract: While online courses are often frowned upon in higher education, they expand college access to students from minoritized communities. Understanding how to design and teach online courses that foster belonging and prepare faculty to teach online with confidence are keys to equitizing higher education. In this presentation, Michelle will summarize a model of humanized online teaching that is being scaled across California higher education in undergraduate online STEM courses. Together, you will explore how online professional development is transforming faculty mindsets and teaching behaviors, as well as fostering belonging in online courses for all students, with higher levels reported by Black, Hispanic, Native American, and Pacific Islander students.
