As part of the University’s commitment to educational excellence, the TLRC trains graduate students and postdocs in effective educational research and assessment techniques. This course, University Studies 395, is designed to support students who are interested in advanced pedagogy and CIRTL Practitioner certification. The class meets each quarter on Wednesday mornings for one hour, and has 1-2 hours of outside work to complete. You do not need to complete a Teaching as Research (TAR) project during the course, but this will be an excellent preparation for a project.

University Studies 395 “TAR Seminar” is open to graduate students who have completed UniStu 390A or 390X. Course material contains a STEM focus, but graduate students from any discipline are welcome to participate. Postdocs are welcome to audit for a certificate. Students who complete the course will be able to:

  1. Describe the goals of discipline-based education research (DBER)
  2. Access education research available in their discipline
  3. Describe common research projects carried out by graduate students in CIRTL
  4. Design a simple teaching-as-research project for a course in their discipline
  5. Describe the function of an Institutional Review Board
  6. Create an IRB application
  7. Conduct classroom observations using COPUS
  8. Find existing, validated survey instruments appropriate for their discipline
  9. Create an effective student survey
  10. Create a clean data set for analysis from sample data
  11. Provide thoughtful feedback to peers working on their own teaching as research projects
